According to a new study from scientists in the US, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) – which is often used to treat menopause symptoms – might reduce the risk of conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Former Hollywood actor Michael J Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the age 29, has received a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his advocacy. Presented by the board of governors behind the Oscars, the prize recognises Fox’s work raising funds and awareness for the Parkinson’s community.
Researchers based in Singapore have found that a new drug candidate currently being trialled for the treatment of Alzheimer’s may also help to manage Parkinson’s symptoms.
According to new research, water surrounding cells in the body might influence the development of protein clumps that damage brain cells in Parkinson’s. Scientists at the University of Cambridge, UK, found that the movement rate of these water-based shells determined how likely proteins were to build up.
