Can equine-assisted therapy benefit people with Parkinson’s disease?

Researchers from Texas Woman’s University, US, are investigating how equine-assisted therapy – which involves working with horses to promote wellbeing – can benefit people with Parkinson’s disease. As part of the five-month study, funded by the non-profit Human Animal Bond Research Institute, 30 men with Parkinson’s disease will be randomly assigned to participate in equine-assisted therapy or simulated horseback riding. The participants’ motor performance, balance, gait and symptoms related to Parkinson’s disease will be assessed before, during and after the therapy. Rhett Rigby, principal investigator of the study, said: “There is currently no known study that utilises equine-assisted therapy as an intervention treatment for those with Parkinson’s disease. Our research could have a significant impact on an understudied population and help contribute to the existing literature on human-animal interaction.”

Covid-19 lockdown may worsen sleep disturbances in Parkinson’s disease

Researchers have found that sleep disturbances caused by isolation during the coronavirus pandemic may lead to worse Parkinson’s disease symptoms. Over 800 people with Parkinson’s disease in India took part in an online survey as part of the study – and more than one third of participants reported sleep disturbances. Around 24% reported new-onset or worsening of sleep disturbances. This was linked to a lack of adequate family support during quarantine, isolating for more than 60 days – and having Parkinson’s disease for more than seven years. Additionally, the results showed that engaging in exercise and new hobbies during home confinement was associated with better sleep. The study authors concluded: “Home confinement during Covid-19 pandemic was significantly associated with [new-onset/worsening symptoms] among PD subjects. […] Physical activity and adoption of new hobbies during home confinement were associated with better sleep.”

Scientists develop tomato genetically enriched with Parkinson’s disease drug

Researchers in the UK have succeeded in genetically modifying a tomato with a common Parkinson’s disease drug. As part of the study, the researchers inserted a gene encoding the enzyme tyrosinase into a tomato to elevate levels of the Parkinson’s drug. The aim of this research is to create a more cost-effective production pipeline, wherein the Parkinson’s drug is extracted from enriched tomatoes and purified into the pharmaceutical product. Their findings could positively impact people with Parkinson’s who have restricted access to pharmaceutical drugs, providing a more affordable source of the treatment. Dr Dario Breitel, the research study’s first author, says: “We have demonstrated that the use of tyrosinase-expressing tomatoes as a source of [the Parkinson’s drug] is possible. It’s a further demonstration of tomato as a strong option for synthetic biology. Additionally, there were surprising beneficial effects including improvement in shelf-life and raised levels of amino-acids that we can…
